IACL members will be interested in a recent publication by the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law. The Cape Town Principles are a new set of principles concerning the selection and appointment of judges. Their focus is on the use of independent commissions, such as the JAC in England and Wales, the South African JSC and many other examples around the Commonwealth.
The Cape Town Principles are the outcome of an international research project which brought together scholars from Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa and the UK to share their experience of the commissions that are responsible for selecting judges in their countries. The project was led by Professor Hugh Corder of the University of Cape Town, and carried out in collaboration with the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law, a constituent part of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.
